Reading every series in Wealth Protection is useful only if it changes what you actually have in force. This article consolidates Emergency Fund, Health, Term, Income Protection, Asset Protection and Nomination into one checklist you can mark against your real life β€” not against an idealised diagram.

"Protection is not a course you complete. It is a set of active arrangements. This checklist exists to turn knowledge into status: covered, partial, or missing.

How to Use This Checklist

For each item, mark one of three states:

  • Done β€” in force, adequate, documents accessible, nominations current
  • Partial β€” exists but thin, outdated, or poorly structured
  • Missing β€” not started

Partial is not failure. It is the most common honest answer β€” and the place where most families should focus next.

1. Emergency Fund

  • ☐ Target months of essential expenses defined (typically 6+; more if income is irregular)
  • ☐ Money is liquid and separate from long-term investments
  • ☐ You know where it sits (bank / liquid fund) and can access it within days
  • ☐ You are not treating equity SIPs or lock-in products as the emergency buffer

2. Health Insurance

  • ☐ Personal health policy in force (not only employer group cover)
  • ☐ Sum insured realistic for your city and family size
  • ☐ Room-rent rules, co-pay and waiting periods understood
  • ☐ Parents covered separately if needed, with senior-aware terms reviewed
  • ☐ Base + super top-up aligned (if used) β€” thresholds match, both active
  • ☐ Annual review date set before renewal

3. Term Insurance

  • ☐ Personal term policy sized to income replacement + liabilities + goals
  • ☐ Cover not limited to employer group term life
  • ☐ Policy term matches the years dependents need support
  • ☐ Full disclosure made at proposal; documents retained
  • ☐ Nominee current and aligned with intent

4. Income Protection

  • ☐ Critical illness cover sized to months of expenses + treatment gap (not a token rider only)
  • ☐ Disability / accident benefit considered if you are a primary earner
  • ☐ You understand CI is not a substitute for health insurance

5. Asset Protection

  • ☐ Home structure and/or contents covered as ownership requires
  • ☐ If you rent: tenant contents / liability considered
  • ☐ Motor cover appropriate (third-party minimum met; comprehensive where asset value justifies)
  • ☐ Home loan insurance not confused with home insurance
  • ☐ Self-employed: tools, stock, liability and key-person risks reviewed

6. Nomination & Documents

  • ☐ Nominees updated on term, health, bank, MF, demat, EPF/PPF/NPS
  • ☐ Life events (marriage, child, divorce, death of nominee) reflected in records
  • ☐ Policy PDFs / physical copies findable by spouse or trusted person
  • ☐ Premium auto-pay or calendar reminders to prevent accidental lapse
Layer Minimum β€œDone” standard
Emergency fund Liquid buffer for essential expenses; not invested in volatile assets
Health Personal policy, adequate SI, known network, current premium
Term Personal term, need-based SI, active nominee
Income protection CI / disability sized to real income gap where relevant
Assets Home/motor/tenant/business assets insured as applicable
Nomination Updated across major products; family can locate documents

Did You Know?

Most families are β€œpartial” on three or more lines at once: employer-only health, thin term, no CI, outdated nominee. Completing one layer fully often matters more than opening five incomplete products.

A Real Household Story

The Sharma household believed they were β€œfully protected” because they paid several premiums every year. A checklist review showed: health was only group cover, term was 3Γ— salary via employer, emergency fund was mixed into equity, and term nominee was still a parent from 2016. Nothing was zero β€” but nothing was solid. Six months later they had personal health, a need-based term plan, a separate liquid buffer, and updated nominations. Same income; different resilience.

MoneyChanakya Insight

A checklist is a mirror. It does not sell products. It shows whether Wealth Protection is a story you tell yourself or a set of contracts and cash buffers that would actually work under stress.

Key Takeaways

  • Mark every layer Done / Partial / Missing β€” honesty beats optimism.
  • Cover Emergency Fund, Health, Term, Income Protection, Assets and Nomination as one system.
  • Employer benefits are layers, not the foundation.
  • Documents and nominees are part of protection, not admin afterthoughts.
  • Use this checklist before the 30-day action plan in the final article of this series.
